Madhu and kaitabha – Chapter 2
17/06/2025Soon after the creation of the vedas, 2 creatures arose from the ear wax of vishnu. One with an insatiable liking for honey, was named madhu. Whereas the other, whose nature mirrors that of an insect, was known by the name Kaitabha. Stunned at their surroundings, they were ravening. An infinite water body was surrounding them, and so they began feeding on this fluid, and as they did, they started becoming stronger so did their pride. With strength, came arrogance. During their aimless exploration of the universe, they came across Brahma, sitting atop his lotus. By this time, their overconfidence had reached a dangerous peak, resulting in their fabricated perception of idolising themselves as mightier than Brahma himself. They questioned Brahma on his audacity to occupy a floral seat that was meant for the exalted, believing it was a position only they deserved. Unfazed, The creator sat there calmly, and looking at his calm demeanour, they commanded him to either step down or accept a combat they should be defeated in for brahma to earn his position on the floral seat. Madhu and kaitabha tried moving the lotus stem to topple brahma over from the lotus, however poor brahma hung on to the lotus, however in the scuffle, the vedas slipped from his hands. The brothers hid the veda into the deep cosmic water, and had now started to threaten brahma to disseminate everything that brahma got into existence. An astonished Brahma now turned towards Vishnu for guidance. This time, Vishnu had already entered the yoga nidra, which is a state of being awake and asleep which made him oblivious to the circumstances. Hence, Brahma invoked nidra, also known as sleep, to awaken the god. And while doing so, he says “ “Tvam Svaha Tvam Svadha Tvam Hi Vashatkarah Swarabrahmanee Matih | Tvam Devi Janani Bhootanam Prakritih Purushaatmika ||” as he goes on to praise her as a source of illusion, support of the universe, and the uninterrupted power behind creation, protection and destruction. Soon after he then pleads, ““Vishnoh Sharirasthita Tvam Akhilam Vyakta Mavyaktam Apyaatmasthita | Tam Devim Jagataam Maataaṁ Vishnor Nidraam Vimochaya ||” which translates to “ “O Devi, You who dwell in Vishnu's body and pervade all manifest and unmanifest worlds, Please release Vishnu from your spell of sleep (Nidra),So he may awaken and protect the worlds from destruction." This invocation reveals a vital truth, that even Vishnu relies on the shakti of the goddess while Braham acknowledges the female divine power as the ultimate force as the ability to act. Soon after, nidra responded to the plea and the preserver soon after opened his eyes. Vishnu without wasting a beat, began looking for ways to combat these 2 creatures. He took a new form, the equine avatar had now become hayagriva. As the battle began, Vishnu found himself unable to slay the pair, the problem that Vishnu noticed was that as one would get tired, the other would gain enough physical strength to engage. 5000 years passed, with Vishnu completely exhausted. Vishnu soon realised that he would have to find ways to foil them using mind games, and so with folded hands, Vishnu addressed them in a very respectful manner, and he offered the pair a boon. Madhu and kaitabha did not take time and fell into the trap asking vishnu“ a boon from you?’’ a weak structure that is trembling at the sight of our very existence? Ask us for a boon, and we shall grant it! This was the exact plan that Vishnu had laid, and he responded with practiced ease, “ grant me that I may kill you both’’. Caught off guard, the brothers hesitated, however bound by the promise, since this was the primordial state of the universe, and they had nothing around them but endless deep cosmic water, madhu and kaitabha’s survival instincts kicked in, and they said “ you may take our lives, but it shall be in a place with no water’’ the hayagriva smiled and started growing bigger in size, he went as large till an extent they couldn't see his face. He placed madhu and kaitabha on his thighs. Born from his ear, they perished on his thighs. Since Vishnu killed madhu, his name became madhusudan, and vishnu reflected solemnly “ looks like the more i create, the more forces there shall be to annihilate'’ as vishnu retrieved the vedas, vishnu removed the meda or fat, from the corpses and told brahma to make land on earth, hence earth would be called medhini, and the soil would be unfit for consumption. The remaining parts of the body disintegrated into 6 pieces each, making the 12 seismic plates of earth.
